DIY Christmas

Christmas is on the horizon, and we're sure many of you (like us!) are already planning meals, curating gift ideas, considering decorations, and trying to balance all the social commitments of the festive season with daily life - and getting some down time in too!

We're here to share some of our ideas for engaging in slow, sustainable and affordable practices, so if you're a fan of crafts then you may want to try some of these accessible home projects.

Napkin Origami

Looking to add a fun and personal touch to festive gatherings this holiday season? Here’s how you can make some origami flowers with napkins - a quick and easy way to wow your guests!

  • Open up your napkins and fold the corners into the centre. Repeat on the same side. You might want to use a ruler or another flat object to flatten and hold the creases.

  • Flip the napkin, and fold the corners into the centre again. You should now have one round of folds on this side, and two on the other.

  • Fold both sets of corners from the first side round to the front while making sure the last side stays in place. Neaten up the ‘petals’ of your napkin flower and make the overall shape as flat or rounded as you like - ready to house a place setting, party favour, or Christmas cracker!

Christmas Crackers

Add a handmade touch to your Christmas table with some homemade crackers!

  • Cut your paper of choice to size, and wrap and seal around 2-3 loo roll inners.

  • Shimmy one inner out the end slightly, and pinch and twist in the gap. Grab a snapper and feed through the tube before tightening the twisted section with ribbon or twine. Remove the partially-out inner and secure this end of the snapper to the paper. Add party hats, gifts, messages, and whatever else your heart desires!

  • Repeating the process at the other end to finish off your cracker.

Paper Chain Decorations

Paper chains are a great way to bring festive cheer with an understated feel. These lovely East End Press kits contain strips of recycled paper with beautifully hand printed designs - make a chain using washi tape, a stapler or by dampening the gummed ends to make one long paper chain (or multiple shorter ones!).

You can also make use of wrapping paper off cuts and other bits and bobs of paper and card you might have lying around the house for a fully diy paper chain - play with paints, pencils, or homemade stamps and stencils to really ramp up the personalisation!

And why stop there? You could also create matching individual decorations, tasseled door hangings - the sky is the limit!
